Lecture/demonstration (45 minutes) of high-speed events under flashlighting.

Free with CSC’s general admission sticker. Seating is limited – plan to come early. Suitable for all ages (strobe lights will be used).

High Speed Photography Workshop

Learn to take your own high-speed photos with Dr. Loren Winters, highspeed imaging and physics professor at the NC School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. Bring your own camera (film or digital.)

Cost includes all materials, including your own sound trigger. $50 CSC or HMA members; $65 non-members
Photogate trigger kit with electronic time delay available for an additional $20.

Limited to 20 participants. Pre-registration and payment required.

NC Wine Country Tour
Science After Dark

Catawba Science Center is pleased to announce its new series of adult programs — Science After Dark. We invite adults -- young and old — to visit CSC after hours and enjoy the museum all to yourself.

NC Wine Country Tour - Experience wine country during a trip to Shelton Vineyard, Stony Knoll Vineyards and RagApple Lassie Vineyards. Learn about the science behind winemaking and sample award-winning wines. (Ages 21 and over)

$32 CSC members, $47 nonmembers (Cost includes transportation and tasting fees. Bring money for lunch and souvenirs/purchases.)
Pre-registration and payment required by April 29.

Cosmic Camp-in
for families

View CSC’s upcoming planetarium feature Astronaut before it makes its debut in June.

Other activities include: constructing and learning how to use a planisphere, making a solar system necklace to wear and creating yummy sun and moon cookies for a snack.

In all, families will participate in three structured activities, plus explore the aquaria and other exhibits.
After a night of sleeping among CSC exhibits, campers will do a scavenger hunt and visit the Science Shop on Saturday morning.

The cost per participant is $20 (for members) and $35 (for nonmembers).
Cost includes pizza dinner, late night snack and a light breakfast.

CSC staff require a ratio of one adult to two children, with a suggested age range of 7 to 10 years.
There is a limit of 80 participants, so call (828) 322-8169 soon to get more information or to register.

Homeschool parents are encouraged to attend and share any concerns they may have and express their ideas about classes they would like to see offered during the 2008-09 school.

Two-part workshop, co-sponsored by CSC and the Hickory Metro Higher Ed Center

Join Dr. Karen McDougal, L-R professor of Biology and Natural History, and CSC Naturalist Bruce Beerbower, for a program on identifying spring wildflowers of Western North Carolina. Learn about folk medicinal history and more.

Spring Wildflowers of Western North Carolina Part 2
Two-part workshop, co-sponsored by CSC and the Hickory Metro Higher Ed Center

Travel to the Crabtree Falls area along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hike 2.5 miles along a semi-strenuous trail to see a dazzling array of wildflowers and cascading waterfall. Wear shoes suitable for hiking, bring a lunch and water. Meet at CSC to board vans at 8:30 a.m.

Winemaking 101
Science After Dark

Learn how to make homemade wine from Mike Walkup and Joe Grzesiak of Advantage Beer and Wine Supplies in Hickory. Enjoy wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres.

Come early and explore CSC aquarium exhibits.

Spend the Night in a Cave
Spelunking Excursion to Raccoon Mountain Caverns, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Families ... celebrate the end of school with an amazing underground adventure! Join CSC Naturalist Bruce Beerbower for an overnight spelunking excursion to Raccoon Mountain Caverns. Explore the caverns (climb, crawl and get dirty), waterfalls and more, then bed down for the night. Participants must be at least 10 years of age and in good health.

Cost: $125 CSC members, $150 nonmembers (Includes transportation, breakfast and lunch on Sunday, cave guides, helmets and other cave gear.) Gear checklist and registration forms are available at time of payment

Summer Fun Camp

Summer Fun science classes will be held Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until noon. Choose from 11 weeks of exciting and fun-filled science classes, designed for specific age groups — 4-year-olds to rising sixth-graders.

Each week features a different class theme. New this year:
Fish Tales (Pre-K and K), Into the Briny Deep (1st - 2nd grade), Space Trekking (3rd - 4th grade) and Vet Vocations (5th - 6th grade).

Registration is first-come, first-served by prepayment.
Cost per five-day week: $40 CSC members, $80 nonmembers
Cost per four-day week: $35 CSC members, $70 nonmember

Daddy and Me
Flying Science Preschool Workshop

Explore the science of how wind moves and discover its strength. Participants will play with air-themed puzzles, inflatable toys, race ping pong balls, blow giant bubbles, keep feathers floating and more. Create a colorful windsock, use air to paint pictures, and design and fly paper airplanes. Experiment with weight and design to get the best flight!

Dads, this is a great chance to gather ideas about how to create air-themed learning centers at home, so you can incorporate science into play. Handouts will be provided.

Cost: member $10, nonmember $20
Accompanying adults are free. Pre-payment and registration required to reserve your space, which is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration deadline is June 10.

Monday, July 7

Critical Thinking Institute

Critical Thinking Institute (CTI), a hands-on, team-based learning experience for rising seventh-graders, is accepting applications from area schools and the general public.

First-year CTI students may choose from three weeks: July 7-11, July 14-18 and July 21-25.
Sessions are from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.

CTI-2, open to last year’s CTI participants, will be held the week of July 14-18.

$75 CSC members, $85 nonmembers.

Partial scholarships are available to those that demonstrate
financial need. Sixteen students will be chosen for each session.
