Stopping Time
The Art and Science of Doc Edgerton's Life Work
Now Open!

Art and science are combined in this joint exhibit exploring the work of educator, engineer, inventor, explorer and photographer — Dr. Harold E. Edgerton.

As a professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT in the 1920s and 30s, his work with the stroboscope led to the invention of ultrahigh-speed photography, sonar devices and offered a new way of looking at the world.

This joint CSC/HMA exhibit features hands-on high-speed interactives, nearly 100 high-speed photographs by “Doc” Edgerton and those he inspired, in addition to regular demonstrations and educational programming.

From Here to There

Explore the science of how things move by land, sea and air at Catawba Science Center’s new traveling exhibition, From Here to There, opening on Saturday, January 26 in Carpenter Hall.

Lift, launch and levitate as you experiment with hands-on exhibits that make learning about gravity, friction, and the laws of motion fun.

The 1,500-square-foot exhibit is color-coded and divided into three main categories: transportation by land, sea and air.

SALTWATER AQUARIA
	Sharks & Stingrays Touch live Nurse Sharks, Cownose and Southern Stingrays in this truly hands-on, aquatic habitat.
	Coastal North Carolina Explore a coastal habitat for saltwater animals, and the chance to touch Sea Stars, Urchins, Conchs, Horseshoe and Spider Crabs.

FRESHWATER AQUARIA
	Catawba River Journey along the banks of the Catawba River and see native, freshwater animals like Painted and Soft Shell Turtles, Sliders, Snakes and Sunfish.
	Lake Hickory Get an up-close view of fish common to Lake Hickory -- Catfish, Striped and Largemouth bass, Bluegill, Walleye and more.

Energy Avenue

Discover the fun of creating and launching rockets, lifting yourself in the air a with a pulley system, taking a spin in Spin Circle, plus much more in Energy Avenue! This new and inventive physical science exhibit was created by our own ingenious CSC exhibit staff. You will find Energy Avenue in the lower level of the building at CSC.

Inventor's Workshop
Now Open for Exploration

Create your own invention, build a rocket, experiment with circuits, make a car that runs on air and bring your invention to life at the “Wall of Moving Art.”

VR Xtreme

Be part of a water cycle, slam dunk on the basketball court and make your own music in VR Xtreme, Catawba Science Center’s virtual reality theater.

EarthWatch Center

Monitor current weather conditions, experience the motion of an earthquake, become “part of the scence” in a volcanic eruption, experiment with clouds and more!

Science Courtyard

Discover science North Carolina style! Try climbing the mountain wall, check out the Piedmont tree house and experiment with sound.

You can even search for fossils at the end of the brook!

Naturalist Center

Visit CSC's Touch Tank, where you can carefully touch a variety of marine animals including horseshoe crabs, whelks, starfish, sea urchins, and more! Observe live reptiles, amphibians, insects and arachnids as well as preserved animals and fossils of many types.

Experiment with a room full of exciting science materials, including a “light & color table” and a kid-sized generator. Try out the “fish-eye view” of Lake Hickory!

RaceWays

Explore the principles of motion through activities with balls and various types of tracks.

Get the Message
Opens June 7 in Carpenter Hall!

Get the Message is a highly interactive exhibit with a variety of components designed to engage visitors ages 3 and older.

From an arched eyebrow to the front page news, experience the dynamic variety of tools people use to communicate.

Try your hand at virtual cave art, signal a crane operator, puzzle over expressions, send a message in Morse code and more.

These hands-on experiences invite you to explore the subtle structures we use when sending and receiving information.

Admission is FREE for CSC members.
Nonmembers: $5 adults, $3 for youth (3 to 18) and seniors (62 and over). Free for children under 3.
